Introduction
Wall mirrors are among the most popular ways to brighten up a room. They can make small rooms seem more spacious, and they're a great way to show off beautiful artwork or furniture — or even just fill up some empty wall space.
But choosing a mirror can be difficult—there are so many options available. How do you find the perfect mirror that fits your design style? I'd like to share with you my tips on how to choose the perfect wall mirror for your home.
What size mirror?
When choosing a mirror for your room, it's important to take into consideration the focal point. The focal point draws the eye to this location in a way that no other part of the room does.
Then, consider how you want the mirror to fit into your room, whether it should be a focal point, an accent piece, or simply live in the background.
● If you want the mirror to make a statement and be a focal point in your home, then go for a big mirror that works as a showpiece.
● If you want your mirror to feel more like an accessory than a full-on piece of furniture, then consider a smaller mirror that will make an impact without taking up visual real estate in the room.
● If you want your mirror to be part of the background, choose a large one or even a pair. But avoid large or intricate frames, since the real purpose is not to decorate but to create an illusion of space.
Mirrors are best placed to reflect light in a room or to accentuate a certain area. An easy way to find out if a mirror would make an ideal addition is by standing outside of its intended location and looking at how it reflects light around the room. If there are any dark corners or areas near windows or doors, consider using mirrors as part of an overall lighting strategy that can enhance the space.
What shape mirror?
Wall mirrors come in all shapes. Some people prefer to stick with a basic square or rectangular shape, while others want something more creative.
● Square: If you're looking for a classic, traditional look, square mirrors are your best bet. They're used as bathroom mirrors and in bedrooms.
● Rectangular: If you're looking for a mirror that can be used in any room of the house, a rectangular mirror is an excellent choice. It will blend in with your existing decor and is a great way to add light to a room.
● Circular: This shape is ideal for creating the illusion of space. They're the most popular shape for a vanity mirror and are also used in bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways.
Mirrors can define spaces. If you want to make a room seem grandiose, opt for horizontal mirrors that create the illusion of length or vertical mirrors that add height. Sharp-edged shapes represent structured formality and order, while rounded shapes are softer and add a sense of comfort–they are welcoming. Other shapes can create a modern vibe.
For mirrors that function as true decorative elements in the décor, I choose round or organic shapes found in contemporary mirrors like the Ulise Mirror by Cattelan Italia or the Central Mirror by Tonelli. They add a modern statement of elegance and boldness to any space. But depending on the project and my creative mood, I can also select a classical or antique mirror when in need of drama or character.
I also like to mix styles, so I add a modern mirror in a classical setting or use a classical and ornate mirror in a modern seating area. Using a mirror in this way will give your home the added character it deserves.
What style of mirror?
There are three main styles of wall mirrors: contemporary, traditional, and modern.
● Contemporary mirrors are usually simple, clean, and minimalistic in style.
● Traditional mirrors are usually framed in wood and feature a classic shape. They often have ornate designs or curves and embellishments that give the mirror dimension.
● Modern mirrors are clean, sleek, and minimalistic. They reflect a sense of luxury and purity through their lack of detail and frames.
The frame of a mirror sets the style. Ornate or eclectic frames define and highlight mirrors as showpieces, while frameless mirrors give subtle elegance to the entire room. The materials of the frame can also influence its style. For example, wood frames give a sense of rustic decor, while gilt finishes suggest luxury. Glass is sleek and more modern, while metal suggests edginess and industrial flair.
How do I create a focal point with a mirror?
Creating a focal point with a mirror is an easy way to add style and elegance to any room. The trick is selecting the right combination for your space.
For example, hang an arrangement of antique-framed convex mirrors on a blank wall to spice up the space with eye-catching accents. Place a single mirror in a stunning frame, such as a metal sunburst design or colorful tiled pattern, to create an irresistible focal point.
And you can boost the aesthetic appeal of an existing focal point, such as a gorgeous fireplace, by hanging a complementary mirror above the mantel. To create a dramatic effect, place glowing candles and a decorative vase of fresh flowers in front of the mirror. The candlelight will cast a warm glow on the mirror's surface, creating a striking effect.
Designer Tips
● Bring the outdoors inside by placing a mirror opposite a window and reflecting the view, especially if you have a garden, a tree, a seascape, or a city view. The visual effect will be doubled, creating a luxurious indoor environment.
● As per Feng Shui principles, the dining room is the best place in the house to have a mirror. Mirrors can multiply wealth and prosperity in the house; placed correctly, they can also improve health and bring good luck.
